The UK Communicative Development Inventories: Words and Gestures

The Communicative Development Inventories are widely used internationally by researchers and practitioners in education, academic settings, and in particular by health professionals including GPs, health visitors and speech and language therapists. They represent a relatively quick, easy and low-cost way to assess a child’s language development, including screening for language delay prior to specialist assessment.

The UK Communicative Development Inventories: Words and Gestures is the first manual developed exclusively for use with UK English-learning children aged 8-18 months. From data collected from over 1200 families representative of the socio-economic make-up of the UK, a unique set of norms has been created together with a questionnaire that assesses gesture use, language comprehension and language production. The manual includes the tool itself, the background to the tool, the methods used for its development, and instructions for using the norms.
